Tactic? No — It’s About Trust

Lloyd had been trying to explain it to his so‑called friend for years, but Maggie never wanted to hear the truth. “All those tactics you play,” he told her, “they don’t work anymore. It’s about trust. And you don’t have any left.”

But Maggie, bull‑headed as always, walked into the office like she owned the place. She marched right up to the counter and said she needed help “recovering something that belonged to her.” The problem was, it never really had.

“What do you want, Maggie?” Lloyd asked, already tired.

“Well, for starters,” she said, lifting her chin, “I want my house replaced. The storm last week destroyed everything. The porch is gone, the inside walls are ruined, and that tree crushed half the roof. That house has been in my family for years. I was supposed to keep it up. Just because I didn’t check on it for a while doesn’t mean I didn’t want it.”

Lloyd stared at her. “You sound like a fool right now.”

Her eyes widened, but he kept going.

“I told you to check on that place. Over and over. You laughed every time and said somebody else would look after it and report back to you. You really believed that? You thought the neighborhood owed you updates?”

He shook his head and let out a dry laugh.

“Maggie, you never gained respect from anybody out there. They all said the same thing — bragging and boasting was your whole game. That’s it. So who exactly did you think was going to report anything to you? You had no power, no respect, and not a caring bone in your body unless the situation was about you.”

She crossed her arms, defensive. “How can you say that about me, Lloyd?”

“Because I’ve known you for years,” he said. “And you’ve never tried to change. Never tried to improve. You just kept playing the same old tactics — using people, pushing people, pretending you were owed something.”

He leaned in, voice low but firm.

“And where did it get you? Look around. You’re on the outside now, looking in. But nobody is looking back at you. You’re erased, Maggie. You don’t know it yet, but you will. Every tactic you used was wrong, and now you’re paying for it.”

Maggie didn’t answer. For the first time in a long time, she didn’t have a comeback, a lie, or a tactic to hide behind.

All she had left was the truth — and the truth was finally staring back at her.
